A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF GAMMA FUNCTION AND RELATED TOPICS

- Version 0.4. - January 2010. -

This is an incomplete and not completely accurate bibliography of work related to classical Gamma function, its generalizations (q-Gamma, p-adic Gamma) and the Gamma probability distribution. The present version is compiled in January 2010, and it is a result of merging the József Sándor's bibliography (http://www.math.ubbcluj.ro/~jsandor/) with my files.

How it started

My first collection of papers related to Gamma functions was a gift from Professor D. S. Mitrinović (1908-1995), who answered my interest in the Gamma function, by giving me two thick folders with mostly vintage classical papers. It was in the beginning of 90's, I can not recall the exact year, but I remember that he said something like "have this, I don't need it anymore". In 1996, we held several meetings of a seminar at Math department of ETF, devoted to the Gamma function. With the idea to collect as many as possible "hard copies" (as electronic versions were not widely available at that time), a group of my younger colleagues from ETF was searching databases in Mathematical Institute at Belgrade, and they made a list of references. This list makes now a large part of the present bibliography. Since paper versions of some items on that list were not available in Belgrade math libraries, I asked my ex-students Antonije Tony Radojević and Velibor Markovski who were at that time enrolled in graduate programs abroad, to search in their university libraries, and they sent xerox copies of many papers.

And then...

Then everything gradually changed. Thanks to electronic libraries, nowadays we have an opportunity to find almost anything in the Web, if it is not too old or, sometimes, too new. But to search for it, we have to know that it exists. Hence, the idea of a large bibliography devoted to the topic of Gamma function emerged again. In August 2007, Horst Alzer made me aware of József Sándor's bibliography. I wrote to József, and he kindly agreed to cooperate with me, and sent me his TeX file. In 2009, Srđan Radovanović (graduate student at ETF), translated all material from my and József's .txt or TeX to the BibTeX format, and he also created several new BibTeX styles, to meet my ideas how it should be. Finally, Dejan Beljić, the AADM web master and expert in computers, posted this text and the bibliography here, and I thank him for all past, present and future efforts in maintaining and updating.

Imperfections

The bibliography is not complete, as it does not contain many recent contributions.

The bibliography is not completely accurate because some items are not cited with all necessary details (missing year, or volume, etc.) and also it can be that some items are there only because they contain the word "Gamma" in the title or elsewhere, but it does not necessarily relate them to the subject of the bibliography.

Future meets past....

I plan that the bibliography evolve in versions as follows (the present version is V0.4):
  • V1. All missing data entered and existing ones are corrected. Items that do not belong here are excluded.
  • V2. Missing relevant items are added up to some reasonable extent.
  • V3. Classification in categories is done (roughly: Euler's Gamma function; Gamma distribution; q-Gamma function; p-adic Gamma function; Other generalizations; Miscellaneous or other topics)
  • V4. Items are posted here (subject to copyright) or links to their locations in the Web are given.
Contributors needed to keep the project alive

While making this bibliography freely available to anyone who might be interested in using it, I would appreciate help in correcting/supplementing/deleting existing items, as well as adding new (recent and earlier) ones. Information about location of electronic versions of existing items will be also welcome. To ensure correctness and completeness of bibliographic information for each new item, please send me either a pdf file, or a Web address where it can be seen. I will post only articles that are already published in peer-reviewed journals.
